Indie Throwback Pick for 8/19 Artist: Empire of the Sun What do you get when you combine the trance-like qualities of Washed Out with dance beats from Daft Punk, and vocals that are sorta like MGMT? Well you get today’s indie throwback band Empire of the Sun. Empire of the Sun consists of two Aussie Musicians…Luke Steele of indie band Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of Pnau. The two found out that they had good musical chemistry and while they were in their separate bands, they started sending each other material. In 2008 they released their debut album “Walking On a Dream”, which they describe as “a spiritual road movie”. Well their spiritual road journey landed them up on the top of the charts in Australia and landed them a platinum album.. After Littlemore came back from a hiatus in which he actually wrote music for Cirque de Soleil, the duo started working on their second and most recent album, Ice On the Dune which came out in 2013. The band has hopes for a film and a Vegas Style Show involving tigers and elephants, but so far they haven’t had any backers. Luke Steele also caused a stir when he compared their Ice on the Dune to Daft Punk’s “Random Access Memories” saying “They had a great marketing campaign, but we’ve got better songs..” Those are fighting words youtube/watch?v=eimgRedLkkU
