Innaa Lilaah wa Inaa Ilayhi Raajicuun This year has been a difficult year, losing two grandmothers within a span of 6 months, but Allaah says in his Qu’raan (with the meaning): every soul shall taste death (Kuli nafsul daaiqul mawt) (29:57) Today, my grandmother, my first mentor, Shamso Xaaji Dabcasar, passed away at the age of 80 in Leicester, UK. A remarkable woman that has witnessed remarkable events. She was my source of inspiration to go back to my roots, and pushed me at a time when I was just mere clueless Somali kid, unable to pinpoint the location of Somalia on a world map. She was my living encyclopaedia of anything pertaining to Somalia, whether be names, locations or historical events. Though she aged with every passing year, her superb memory remained intact. She was the type the Somali historians would love interview in order to preserve the ever-disappearing Somali history. A successful business-woman before the civil war; there is not a place in Somalia (and its surrounding occupied territories) that she did not visit. Born in 1934 in Burco (Burao), she was part of the early Somali women activists that campaigned for Somalia’s independence through poetry. Turning to business in the post-independence period; she discontinued her business activities after the country was plunged in to civil war. It was from there on that she never ceased praying for Somalis and Somalia and the return to stability for the sake of the Somali generations to come. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said (with the meaning of): Whoever builds a masjid seeking the Face of Allaah, Allaah will reward him with a house in Jannah (Two Sahihs). We pray to Allaah that He accepts the masjid that she recently build and rewards her with a house at the highest place in Jannah. Amiin. We leave this world with nothing but our deeds.
