Insanity Max:30 - Day 1 Review Ok so I mentioned yesterday that I was starting Insanity Max:30. I thought I knew what I was letting myself in for but oh my god! I thought some of you might like to know how the first workout went.. if so, read on (I wont post these updates every day, just at various stages throughout the program).. ► Stats - Day 1 The program advises you to take your stats and photos on days 1, 30 and 60. Ive posted before on this page saying photos are a great way to track your progress so, practising what I preach, Ive noted down my Day 1 stats (below) and taken my photos (not being shared until the end of the program!): » Weight: TBC » Chest: 41 » Waist: 33 » Hips: 32.5 » Thighs: 21 » Triceps: 14 » Calves: 14 ► What is Insanity Max:30? For those of you who arent familiar with the concept of Max:30 - Ive mentioned it enough times so where have you been! Basically its a 60 day programme, with one set of DVDs for the first 30 days and a tougher set for month 2. Every day of the week you do a different workout. You work as hard as you can until you cant go any longer or until your technique starts to deteriorate. Once you hit the wall - thats your Max Out time. You note that down and jump right back into the workout and complete the 30 minutes. The next time you do that particular workout youre looking to go a little bit longer before maxing out. Got it? Ok - come on yall - lets go! ► My Pact! Before I started I made a pact with myself that I wouldnt cheat. I would be honest about my max out time because, at the end of the day, whats the point in cheating? If I grab a quick rest or carry on with crap technique how am I ever really going to compare my times as the weeks go by? My time could be much better in week 3 but I couldve just cheated more! So every day I do Max:30 Im making sure that the first time I take a break or the first time I know that my technique has gone - thats my max out time. Im giving myself no leeway - Im writing it straight down regardless of how happy I am with it. ► The Workout - Cardio Challenge So the Day 1 workout is Cardio Challenge and its a baptism of fire. Cardio Challenge is Max:30s version of the original Insanity fit test so its tough - very tough. Some of the people on the DVD are maxing out at just over 7 minutes so that gives you an idea! ► The Warm-Up We start with something I was expecting - the warm-up. That should ease me into it nicely shouldnt it? Wrong! This warm up is (excuse the pun) insane. Nothing like the original Insanity warm-up, nothing like the warm-ups we do in class - this is full on from the start. 5 moves, 30 seconds each, twice through. By the end of the 5 minute warm up Im a bit scared about whats to come. If that was the warm-up what the hells the next 25 minutes going to be like!? Towards the end of the 5 minutes Im thinking surely well get a fairly lengthy rest at the end of it whilst Shaun explains the format of the workout wont we? Nope! We get 30 seconds and then were off again. ► Into the Workout Once we started the session proper (as well as trying my best not to die) I was also trying to work out the format of Cardio Challenge. So how many moves, for how long and how many sets? This was nothing to do with my OCD and, if Im being honest, was completely to do with wanting to know how long it was going to be until the next water break! I just about managed to suss the format whilst doing the workout but I was that knackered that it was really tough keeping track of where I was so it didnt help much! I remember feeling a bit like this when starting the original Insanity though so Im quite confident that the second time I do each workout Ill have a better idea of where I am and whats coming next. Cardio Challenge consisted of 5 rounds of different moves, each lasting 5 minutes. Each round was made up of 3 different moves that you do for 30 seconds. You do these moves 3 times through and have a 30 second break at the end - totalling 5 minutes. To be honest I was almost ready to die from about half way through the first round of moves but I somehow made it to the end and got the the 30 second break. It didnt help much though cos I was breathing that hard it was impossible to grab a drink of water before we got going again! ► I Maxed Out! So were now just over the 10 minute mark and my legs have had it. Around half the people on the DVD have already maxed out and I can feel Im starting to go as well. I really wanted to get to that second water break at 15 minutes but it didnt happen. I maxed out at 13:20 - the 4 jabs/4 high knees finished me off! I could feel that my knees werent getting to waist height, my technique had gone so thats it - thats my max out time. So, Id maxed out and there were still 3 rounds to go. 15 minutes of hell! Im not ashamed to say I maxed out a few more times before the end of the DVD. I tried to KEEP MOVING(!) and modified a few moves for a little while (theres some completely crazy moves in there!). Eventually I made it to the end - phew! ► Reflections on Day 1 Its strange how, when you know the end is coming and that timer at the bottom of the screen is ticking over 28 minutes, you find something extra from within yourself and you just keep going. That stuck with me a bit. If I could do that after 28 minutes, why couldnt I do it after 13 when I maxed out? Ive posted on here a few times about the body being capable of much more than people think and that the trick is convincing the mind and this was evidence of that fact. So thats going to be a thought I take into all the workouts for the rest of the 60 days - am I really about to max out or am I just not digging deep enough here? Can I put how tired Im feeling to the back of my mind and push a little bit further? I remember watching an interview a while ago where Shaun T was talking about the original Insanity (I think he was comparing Insanity and Focus T25) and said its for people who are like I wanna die.. well Shaun - Cardio Challenge definitely killed me! Original Insanity was hard.. Max:30 takes things to a whole new level.. but thats why I liked it.. yes it was insanely tough - but then it has to be. If its easy; if its not a challenge then why would you stick at it? Im definitely sticking at it. Thats me for the next 59 days. I already know its going to hurt; I already know itll absolutely destroy me; but, in a weird way, I already know Im going to love it..
