Inspire Inc Phagwah Festival… A kaleidoscope pack the National Stadium........... With powder fogging up the air with a kaleidoscope, the National Stadium Providence, East Bank Demerara, came alive with thousands packing the arena in celebration of Phagwah yesterday. Organisers said that there were more than 20,000 persons at the stadium. “Bring out yuh powda, bring out yuh abeer and bring a bucket watah” was the signature tune as Terry Gajraj spread the Phagwah spirit on stage for the exhilarating event. The crowd was also entertained by Prince JP, Ishara Dance Troupe and other top artistes. Music was provided by Shakti Strings Orchestra. This festival of colours is celebrated with songs, music and dances. A variety of water colours are mixed and sprayed on all those who participate in the celebrations. Corresponding coloured powder is smeared on their bodies as well. The event was hosted under Inspire Inc in collaboration with Hindus United for Guyana (HUG). Guyanese united from all walks of life at one common place to celebrate the grandeur of Phagwah. At the event there were sweetmeats, ‘seven-curry’ and other delightful delicacies on sale. In addition, there were water slides, trampoline and Ferris wheels for the kids. A water sprinkler designed for persons to soak into the festivities was also available. Fly Jamaica offered a free ticket to one lucky patron at the event. Persons simply inserted their name and phone number on a piece of paper and placed that piece of paper into boxes located in a tent near the stage. Patrons at the event also had the opportunity to win free hampers, compliments of Avon Guyana, Families and friends turned out in their numbers sporting their white outfits that morphed into totally new patterns and styles by the coloured powder and water by the time the event reached a crescendo. Yesterday, Canter trucks, horse carts and other vehicles were seen on many streets, transporting people who sprinkled coloured water and powder. Temples countrywide also observed the occasion with bhajan singing and sharing of sweet meats. Countrywide, Phagwah is a time when Guyanese of all colours and creed participate, frolic, mingle, embrace and play as part of festive activities. Phagwah is a Hindu religious holiday to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Universally, it heralds spring. Hindus traditionally wear white on Phagwah Day. Powder, perfume, and water are also thrown on family, friends and neighbours on this day by Hindus and non-Hindus alike in what is an amusing, good-natured and joyful celebration.
