Interested to note that Axl Rose has just been named the greatest - TopicsExpress

Interested to note that Axl Rose has just been named the greatest singer ever recorded, by virtue of his apparently 5 octave vocal range, that just pips Mariah Carey. So many people think of music as a science and believe that talent is somehow measurable. Thats why things like the above happen. Music as a science would all sound something like those really bad old ring-tones. The notes are there, but the feeling isnt. The variable that turns the science of music into an art, is feeling, of the performer and of the listener. Without passion, music is simply boiling away in someones bunson burner, being pathologically tested by those obviously not in the know. Its a classic case of it aint what youve got, its how you use it. When referring to art, greatness is subjectively immeasurable and relies on opinion that grows from the stimulation of the senses. A singer might be able to sing all the right notes, but the important thing is in the timing and expression of those notes. Timing and expression may be measurable to a certain extent, but to be fully effective, they must be received by the senses of another being. With respect to Axl Rose, who I didnt realise was blessed with such vocal range, to say he is the greatest singer ever to have been recorded, because of his amazing vocal range is a bit like giving someone a workshop with more tools and materials than any other workshop in the world, and calling them the greatest carpenter who ever built anything. For me, while sometimes the science stimulates intellectual interest, the greatness is in the art :-)
