Interesting article, though the writer misses the fact that Frank Baum -writer of the Oz books- was a racist who coined the phrase the only good Indian is a dead Indian and that the description of the Wicked Witch of the West bears a striking similarity to anti-Semitic propaganda, which I think is a strong point in favor of the Jew bashing European source fir the pointy hat stereotype, at least in Baum anyway. Another thing the writer misses completely are the possible sources among various heretical movements in the late Middle Ages, some of which were centered in areas where the local custom included very tall columnar or conical headgear for women.
