Interesting to see how culture and law ebb and flow on this. Not an easy issue and also is one that comes with a lot of passionate debate from both sides. LOS ANGELES—The countys Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to adopt a law allowing court-ordered involuntary mental health treatment for people with serious mental illness and a history of evading treatment. Such laws, though divisive, have become more popular nationwide in the aftermath of recent mass shootings, when some have argued that mandated mental health treatment might have prevented them. Los Angeles County—the states largest county, with 10 million residents—became the fourth California county this year, and the fifth in the state, to fully adopt the act known as Lauras Law. State lawmakers passed the law in 2002, giving counties the option of enacting it locally. L.A. County had rolled out a limited pilot program in 2004.
