Interim Project Manager - Gorilla Sanctuary (Gabon) Hiring Organization: Association Projet Gorille Fernan-Vaz (PGFV) Date Posted: 2015-01-08 Position Description: Project Background The PGFV is PASA and GFAS accredited and consists of both a sanctuary and a rehabilitation centre for western lowland gorilla orphans (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) who are victims of the bushmeat trade in Gabon. The project is located in the Fernan-Vaz lagoon near the town of Omboué, just north (outside) of Loango National Park. The Sanctuary consists of a forested enclosure. These gorillas act as conservation ambassadors to help educate national and international visitors to Evengue Island on the plight of great-apes. The rehabilitation centre is located on Oriquet Island, away from human exposure, where a group of 8 orphaned gorillas live. We hope to reintroduce them back into the wild and efforts are currently on-going. The PGFV base camp is located at Mpando (on mainland) just 600 meters across from Oriquet Island. The PGFV interim manager is expected to oversee the management of the gorillas and the local staff under the guidance of the off-site project advisor and director. Position Description: Gorilla management and husbandry - Supervise the daily husbandry and care of the gorillas. - Oversee the gorilla health prevention program; Local staff management - Daily management of the local staff (assisted by a local human resources consultant and a local assistant manager); - Hire and train local staff (as needed); - Organize monthly salaries and daily accounting with ongoing communication with the PGFV’s out-of-country accountant and/or project advisor; - Oversee the employee health prevention program; Qualifications/Experience: 1.French-speaking a must (fluency in English an asset); 2.At least 28 years-old; 3.At least 6 months of hands-on experience with orphaned great-apes (gorilla experience preferred); 4.At least 6 months of experience managing local staff in a developing country (experience in Africa an asset); 5.Veterinary degree with a valid license an asset (with a least 1 year of clinical experience and 6 months of field experience in Africa); 6.Proven communication, team-work and leadership skills; 7.Willingness to live in an isolated and remote area with very basic living conditions; Salary/funding: Salary and benefits: to be negotiated based on qualifications and experience.
