Interview with Ty Gavin by Jessica Carrillo PART 2 7 Who were your musical influences? In life, everything, but as a performer, The Rolling Stones instantly cancelled out The Beatles for me. The Doors, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, Bob Dylan, Edgar Allen Poe, Lou Reed, New York Am Radio, Sinatra, Tony Bennett stuff along those lines. Later on, I discovered new horizons going through songbooks and learning about Cab Calloway, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Little Richard, Louis Prima. The Blues too, thats a whole other long story. Singing in church in Latin and English both as an altar boy and in several choirs. Ive learned a lot about stage skill from my experience with theater groups performing many Musicals. It all comes down to really great songs, the genre doesnt matter. Of course I love writing and singing my own songs songs my friends wrote. 8 How do you identify yourself culturally? My father is New York Irish and my Mother is San Antonio Mexican. Both are rich very rich musical backgrounds with great stories of love, history and heroes and lessons to learn from. Both were part of shaping the Blues and American music. 9 How does identity affect the music you play? One aspect of identity is Age. It brings experience and deep appreciation. it means a lot, Im surprised every time I sing that Im still singing and the fire inside me is burning stronger than ever. I cant imagine not. I continue to have the great fortune of playing with really incredible musicians. The PROS&CONS Band is the best band I have ever sang with. Thats hard to say after being with great bands like The NEXT, Americas Most Wanted (L.A.), The Screwballs, The SACREEPER, The Titans. Im sure this is an incomplete list of bands. 10 Does the style of music you play influence how you dress? Everyday but Halloween! Even before the Punk days I liked Glam and Fashion but always cautious with Trends. Im not afraid to stand out in a crowd. I confess that I do like to walk around like a STAR in my own mind but I dont say I am! 11 Do people who like your music dress, dance, act a certain way? I have seen the full spectrum, everything from carefree, careless, casual, cocktail, formal and character. All those shoes are filled with some incredibly interesting examples of dont judge a book by its cover, you may miss out on some very interesting people. Dancing, Ive seen everything from mosh pits to the mating dance, freaky free form, Swing dancers, conga lines, dance floor fights, all kinds of expression. People going to clubs and halls are not just at a show but part of the show too. Oh, yeah and I love to see a good Robot!
