Iranians got lucky. WWI broke out and the United States emerged as the new superpower, with her own dominating geopolitical interests. That included an independent Iran out of Russian influence. In the 1920s, Russia was trying to survive the aftermath of a world war, a revolution and an entanglement with the internal fighting between the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks for a decade or two.
