Is Cape Town Off the E-toll Hook? Sanral has announced that Cape Town will not be seeing e-tolls any time in the near future. In fact, explained the Roads Agency, Cape Town’s e-toll experience is set to be a little different to that of Gauteng. Gauteng’s tolled freeways have been a source of contention since before they became active, and groups such as Outa and The Justice Project SA have been fighting for the rights of citizens of the province to use the freeways without having to pay. So what tolling system is planned for the Cape? As explained by a representative of the agency, Cape Town’s tolls will be temporary with the agency acting as concessionaire. This means that Sanral will upgrade, finance and manage the roads and then return them to the provincial government after a specified period. Sanral has also stated that the N1 and N2 highways will be subject to electronic/automatic tolling, but will be upgraded too. Sanral has made clear that it needs billions to upgrade roads and the simple statement that its goal is to upgrade the roads of the Cape has made Gauteng residents angry.
