Israel Gathering Tonight at 7:30pm at Temple Beth El The 11th - TopicsExpress

Israel Gathering Tonight at 7:30pm at Temple Beth El The 11th century poet Yehudah Ha-Levi wrote, “My heart is in the East and I am at the far end of the West.” These days, I understand how he felt, as our thoughts and prayers continue to focus on events in Israel, even as the situation continues to unfold. It was a little more than a week ago that we mourned the tragic deaths of Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaar, and Naftali Frenkel, three Israeli teenagers brutally murdered by Palestinian terrorists. Then came the horrifying news of the revenge killing of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, a Palestinian teen, by Jewish extremists, who are now in Israeli police custody. Now Hamas is shooting hundreds of missiles from the Gaza Strip at Israeli cities and towns, terrorizing millions of civilians, disrupting all aspects of daily life, even including weddings and summer camps. Israel has leafleted and called the people of Gaza, warning them to stay away from Hamas terrorists and targets, as it seeks to safeguard Israeli citizens with precision attacks against those who are shooting the missiles. Tonight, Wednesday, July 9, we will have an impromptu gathering at Temple Beth El at 7:30pm. This will be an informal opportunity to ask questions, gain information, and express concerns about events in Israel, and to share our hopes for peace. If you are unable to attend, please feel free to contact me directly to find another time to discuss the situation. And we will include special prayers for Israel’s well-being and for peace at our Shabbat evening service on Friday night at 6:30pm. The Psalmist urges us, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” We pray that the One who makes peace in the high heavens leads us to peace for our people Israel, for the Land of Israel, and for all the world. L’shalom, Rabbi David S. Widzer
