It appears there is a lot of misunderstanding about the curriculum. My students at the university (undergrad and graduate students alike) lack basic math skills but that isnt really the problem. The problem is that many simply fear math and refuse to be they can learn their way out. But whos fault is it? Back in the old days when we received top rankings, other problems such as rigidity of the program was the centre of attention. Yes, I think I must say memorizing multiplication table is a must! But the understanding of it (e.g. groups of 3s) is of equally importance.
