It didnt take long. Less than 24 hours after saying that he had no philosophical objection to a travel ban of countries in Africa with Ebola epidemics, President Obama announced that a travel ban would do more harm than good. The President failed to inform the people that there are no Ebola cases in African countries which already have such a ban in force. The United States now has two confirmed cases. In the mid-nineteenth century, quarantines and travel bans stopped a cholera epidemic in New York in its tracks. Ther are many such quarantines on record that stopped diseases like Measles, Whooping Cough, Tuberculosis and other diseases. Even the dreaded Leprosy was treated for the first 5,000 years of history by isolating its victims from the rest of the community. And, it is far more difficult for a healthy person to contract Leprosy than Ebola. It seems to be a no-brainer to people outside the presidency that you should separate sick people from well people, and that includes people who have had contact with victims. Jamaica and St. Lucia have already banned travel from West Africa. President Obama has completely lost any trust I had in him. Look at the record: 1) There is no chance of an outbreak We must rethink our procedures. 2) There is no chance of a wide outbreak. Quarantines place on people who came in contact with Ebola patients (on a voluntary basis at first and not always enforced. For example, what was the CDC thinking when it gave nurse #2 permission to fly when she had a mild fever? When asked about this before Congress, Director Thomas Frieden replied, I have not seen the transcript of the conversation. Why not? You would think that, considering the possibility of a contagion sweeping across the country he might have been the least bit curious about how this happened and who made the decision. I might also point out that we have been told by the President and the CDC that the ONLY way to contract Ebola is by DIRECT contact with an afflicted persons body fluids. Yet, physicians (and nurses) who have treated Ebola patients wearing protective gear and face masks becanme infected, suggesting that Ebola might be contracted by other means. So how did our President respond? Ive met with an Ebola patient who recovered, right in the Oval Office. That makes it sound like the patient recovered in the Oval Office, but Im sure that is not what the President meant. I hardly think that he would expose himself or his family to a dread disease. Thats a job for the American people.
