It happens in Singapore as well: A new citizen, Haja Fakkurudeen Usman Ali, is currently being investigated by MHA for allegedly going to Syria “with the intention to undertake violence” in the ongoing armed conflict there. This is according to a media statement issued by MHA today (22 Mar). Haja, 37, was formerly an Indian national who obtained his Singapore citizenship in 2008. He is said to be working in a local supermarket as a manager. It’s not known under what criteria he was given the Singapore citizenship. When the authorities were informed of Haja’s alleged travels to Syria by a member of public, he had already left Singapore. He left in November last year and has not returned back to Singapore since. MHA said authorities have also established that another Indian national, Gul Mohamed Maracachi Maraicar, also 37, had abetted and assisted Haja in his radicalisation. Gul also planned to take part in the Syrian conflict. Gul was a Singapore Permanent Resident. MHA said Gul, who worked as a system analyst with a MNC in Singapore, was investigated under the Internal Security Act. Gul has already been deported and banned from entering Singapore for his role in abetting and aiding Haja. His PR status has also been terminated. MHA reminds the public to alert the authorities if they suspect anyone who is planning to undertake armed violence overseas. It said this will enable the authorities to take appropriate action to prevent the person from pursuing acts of violence that could cause harm to himself or to others and even lead to the loss of lives.
