It is a trap... The welfare system does not provide a path out, rather it is a trap and instead of being a safety net it makes things worse in the long run. The way the system is set up it makes it near impossible to get out. What we should be doing is providing job skills training as part of signing up for any government support. Help them build the skills to move out of poverty. Now this may not get most their dream jobs but instead get them into a sustainable career. There are many jobs out there that are in short supply of skilled workers and there are many workers to fill those jobs but lack the skills. So we need to put the two together. What would you do if you were asked to change the system? It is about giving people pride and helping them develop self esteem and stop rewarding poor behavior.
