“It is one of the few streets in the city centre capable of recalling the medieval image of the town, tank to many well kept ancient buildings and careful restorations. Originally this was one of the residential sections near the lake shore and the harbor, in continuity with Cortesella district with its many artisan shops. Due to his importance it became the stronghold of one of the most important families, the Vittanis, who fought against the Rusca family for the rule of the town. A house with a front of white and black stones and a powerful tower go back to this period. The fundamental role of this district at the very beginning of the Modern Age is testified by sumptuous renaissance buildings like palace of the Macafassi family (later of the Sangiulianis). It is decorated with distinctive fresco – possibly 16th century – of a damsel appearing at a window; inside there in an elegant renaissance courtyard. Around this area, along Via Muralto, were carpenter and butcher shops (in the present piazza Boldoni). Important remains of a public building of the Roman Age – probably a theater – have been found in the basement of a house“.
