It is recommended to fast during this blessed month and especially on the 9th, 10th or 11th of Muharram. Abu Hurayrah (ra) said: “The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.’” [Muslim, 1982] The Prophet (pbuh) said: “For fasting the day of ‘Aashura’ (10th of Muharram), I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” [Muslim, 1976]Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) reported that the Prophet (pbuh) used to fast the ninth. [Muslim].
