It is very important to be literate in the country in which you reside for many reasons. I have been mulling over the concept of literacy (or illiteracy) since my visit to Hungary in March of this year. I have always thought about US school systems and what a challenge it is for those who have somehow been advanced without being literate in English. But it seems like one can easily grow up in a Hungarian speaking family outside of Hungary and understand and speak Hungarian, even fluently, with hardly any idea of how to properly spell the words and I think that would officially make them illiterate in Hungarian. Illiterate seems like a strong word for someone who could be a fluent speaker in two languages but only able to read and write in one of them. Language learning has so many different aspects to it: reading, writing, speaking, understanding cultural references, etc that I think my journey with Hungarian will be a lifelong effort!
