It is with great sadness that I report the death of one of my lifes greatest influences. Paul Mabrey has succumbed to the ravages of Pancreatic Cancer. Paul had been my H.S. Music teacher during my junior year, he got me involved in community theater with The Masquers in Collinsville and later with the Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Leonard VanCamp at SIU-E. Later we were able to become room mates at an apartment complex in Spanish Lake. His gifts were many. He moved equally well from musical comedy to the concert stage singing a variety of classical works. With his charming personality, commanding stage presence and good looks, needless to say; he had his fan club of which I was proud to be a member. Perhaps his greatest gift was that of knowing early in life the value of becoming a music educator. For more than 40 years he conducted university and community choruses and church choirs. In addition to the private voice lessons and the many singers he created, he inspired others to conduct and teach as well. He never stopped connecting people in order to help them achieve their goals. It was through a show with Paul at the Looking Glass Playhouse that I met the love of my life, Pam; and I shall be forever grateful. Seven weeks ago Paul let me know via Facebook of his health situation and his plans to come to STL for a visit with his many friends here. Alas, the tempo of the big C as he called it, did not allow enough time even as I planned a trip to see him in Tulsa. I will always remember his Emile Debeque in South Pacific and his rendition of Some Enchanted Evening that brought the house down. He is survived by his lovely wife Cynthia, and so many children and grandchildren that I have lost count. Looking back now; I can see how I felt like Paul was the big brother that I never had. From helping me chart a course, paving the way and cheering me on. I know he did the same for a hundred others, but just for today, I will think he did it just for me. I can hear the orchestra warming up, the house lights have dimmed and we stand in the wings waiting to go on. With a twinkle in his eye, he asks are you ready kid? Yes, Paul; thanks to you I was ready for anything. I will see you at the cast party.
