It isn’t easy being a killer whale calf because even under natural circumstances, they have a mortality rate of 30% in their first year. So, it doesn’t come as a complete surprise that a southern killer whale calf, born just this past September, has died. Despite the odds, Peter Ross, director of the Ocean Pollution Research Program at the Vancouver Aquarium, says this is “an opportunity to remind ourselves of the impact we have on killer whales. There are 100,000 people for every single killer whale in the Salish Sea area (there are 78)… We need to understand how we can coexist with these animals in a way that will let them recover.”
