It took me longer than usual to finish this book. Written in an old English dialect, the story is constructed around Tedd Durbeyfields, a young, innocent beautiful girl, who is sent by her parents to pursue a tenuous family connection with the wealthy D’Urbervilles, in the hope of a better life. Here, she meets Alec, a manipulative, dangerous man, the so-called cousin, that will make her days terrible. Returned home, Tess meets Angel, a respectful, educated young man that will change her perspective about life. If they will end up together, if Angel will discover Tess’ past or if the book has a happy ending… you will have to discover. I had a hard time understanding this story, because of the morality and culture of those times. I was shocked by the character’s decisions, by the surroundings, by the evolution of the action, but I am glad I can now mark this book as read. It has been a difficult journey.
