It was asked: What does First Nation, Native American mean? in a Yahoo forum I peeked in on. Another person jumped in with an answer, but was trying to make a BIG distinction between Canadian Natives and the indigenous people of America and those Native American people who come from the United States.....yup, said it like that. I couldnt leave it alone....lol! I had to say something.....mind you, I jumped in without really thinking about how I should answer or what I was gonna say, and I may have missed some things, knowing it means different things to different nations. But...........Off the top of my head, and real quick, I could only answer: Canada or America...all are First Nations of this land (continent)...and were first to originally and freely occupy and live on the lands, before being discovered by Europeans, Spanish, Viking, etc., and before forced assimilation and relocation when areas were being claimed by another country. Not that there was necessity or a big need to prior to this, but deliberate distinction between Canada and United States was not so pointedly referred to by us or anyone else, since we all were suffering genocide, slavery, and in jeopardy of even extinction. In todays times, First Nations is not looked upon as a class of Native American Indian (regardless of what region one may be from), as it would be taking part in discrimination between all our peoples, which is part of the forced conformity going back to the first days of all injustice against all Indigenous and Native peoples of this land. But it is a special reference for us, being descendants of those who werent killed off completely, or shipped off to another country (with family lines continuing elsewhere)...that our blood lines can be traced back, or are known to be by association, to the original inhabitants of this continent. Čhetáŋ Čík’ala Wíŋyaŋ (“cheh-tan chee-ka-la win-yan”) First Nations Sioux, Apache, Choctaw, Pawnee, Comanche I hate when my emotions take over, cuz then Im second-guessing myself or the 411 I share, as I know it. I tried to be as accurate as possible, based on my knowledge and what it means to me. But I was offended by how this person was trying to draw lines between ANY Native peoples, muchless Canada and America....we suffer enough discrimination as it is, to be doing it to each other?!?!?! Ummmmmmmm............NO!!!! Native blood is Native blood, full or mixed nations...period! And that makes us all whove lived and been on this land the Originals...we were HERE, not brought here or sailed our happy behinds over here, dont get it twisted, baby! LOL!!!! But I AM sharing in case anyone can elaborate, not necessarily correct, my responses to others. ~Kit~
