Its India Days One and Two: From Hollywood to Bollywood (10 Nov 13 -- 11 Nov 13) Los Angeles International, Amsterdam Schiphol, and Indira Gandhi International Arriving at Los Angeles International, I found the constantly evolving LAX routine had evolved further as a result of the shootings in Terminal Three just nine days prior to takeoff to India. The shuttle to Terminal Two for departing flights could no longer stop at Terminal Two, but somewhere in the nether-lands twixt Terminals Two and Three. Once inside, however, procedures seemed amazingly unaltered. Yet, as we passed through security, there was a discernible tension among the TSA agents, many of whom had witnessed and endured the horrific events that prior Friday. My thoughts, though, quickly turned to the new adventure just commencing, one that would retrace some of my steps taken in the winter and spring of 1977, when for three months I traveled throughout Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal. Though this new adventure is to be a brief 22 days, it will have an ambitious itinerary focusing on two states I previously bypassed -- Rajasthan and Kerala -- the desert northwest and the tropical southwest of India. My long-time friend Steve Ferro and I will fly into Delhi and 21 days later fly out of Mumbai, formerly called Bombay. We are traveling with Indian Rail Passes, as I had in the 1970s, with planned stops in Delhi, Agra, Udaipur, Pushkar, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Goa, various places in Kerala, and finally Mumbai. After nearly 40 years, what changes could I expect to see? Would I recognize India -- the cities, the countryside, and its people? My hope would be to see a country that has taken great strides in improving its abject poverty, sanitary conditions, and standard of living, while continuing to cherish and enhance its unique cultural heritage. Let the adventure begin!
