Its a chilly morning for Day 3. It drizzled as we sat in for our buffet breakfast at Century Pines Restaurant at 7:30 a.m. This morning we had fried rice, fried soy sauce noodle, pancakes, ham, toasts, porridge, salad with multiple dressings, cereal and fruits to complete the meal. Yummy! It was indeed a satisfying breakfast for us all before we board our coach to travel to Ringlet. Our coach arrived at Stadium JKKKB Ringlet approximately at 9:15 a.m. By then, Ringlet Brass Band (RBB) & Hua Lian (Govt & Pte) members have already reached and settled in, waiting for us to join in the physical warm up. The whole big group formed a ring in the centre of the stadium where the stretchings began. It was followed by the slow jog. Our resilient members followed the regime religiously resulting in zero fall outs who report sick. After the physical warm ups, its time to pick up instruments and carry on with the musical rehearsal. Like the days before today, musical warm ups were intensively conducted by Mr Lester Lim. Mr Yeap stepped in occasionally as he was busy training percussionists. We were greeted by the presence of our resident conductor, Mr Yea Guo Ming who managed to join us just this morning and he too, took turns to conduct the band with Mr Lim. Our rehearsal turned out well and we managed to rehearse full music pieces such as Good Life, Dikir Puteri and Super Bass to name the many before we break for lunch. We headed to Golden Ship Restaurant, a shophouse unit at the end of the row of shophouse adjacent to our training venue. They served delicious food such as rice, tofu, fried chicken, fried pumpkin, soup and vegetables. Earlier, Kimberly brought Ms Zulaiha to a nearby coffeehouse to pack food for Muslim students and teachers. In the packet were 2 different types of vegetables, sambal chicken and salted egg. It was the first time Azri, our drum major tried salted egg and he managed to finish the entire half. He commented that it didnt taste that bad. Good Job Azri! After lunch, we took our coach and made a short trip to visit the compounds of our hosting school, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Ringlet (SMKR) situated on top of the hill. There were flowers everywhere and they looked fresh and beautiful. We were brought up to their band room, on the 6th floor of the building. It was quite a small room though considering RBBs strength of 60-70 members. We were then brought down to a place where RBB practiced for marching band competitions. Its actually an open space with cemented ground made for activities such as badminton. Due to the nature of its size, RBB could only practice bits and pieces of their formation at any one time. We were informed by Mr Yeap that nearing the competition date, members will contribute money for bus rental (Rm300) to bring them to a bigger open space where they could do full formation practices. It was indeed an eye opening experience for us Singaporeans and most of us reflected upon our learning that we have been taking a lot of things in life for granted and we should start to appreciate what we have on our plates instead of taking them for granted. At around 2:30 p.m. we headed back to our training venue to continue with music rehearsal. Dinner today was around 6 p.m. where we tried food at a new restaurant recommended by Mr Yeap named Kedai Makanan Loong Cheun. We had rice, sambal fish, fried kangkong, soup and tofu. Our Muslim members and teacher had a packet of chicken rice each. After dinner, we decided to call it a day and were brought up to Brinchang for shopping at the Pasar Malam! We couldnt get any more excited than this experience could we, band? Back in the hotel, students and teachers freshen up and met for the routine daily debrief session. Yesterday, teachers were surprised by a question from amongst the students. Cher, if you say that our reflections were not meaningful enough, can you teach us then what to do in order to deliver a meaningful reflection? Teachers were caught off guard and requested for a day to pen down useful tips for reflection since it was already the end of debrief for the day. We all called it a day by 10:30 p.m. and thats how we spent our Day 3 together! Stay tuned for Day 4 updates. Its going to be Concert Night!
