Its a matter of perspective. Pictures never moved. And so when film was introduced, they were naturally called Motion Pictures (still in use) or Moving Pictures - Movies for short - to distinguish them from the then obvious default situation. Silent Movies were not called silent movies back when they were silent movies. They were just called movies. To the contrary, when sound was introduced to film, that warranted a new name, Talking Pictures or Talkies for short, to distinguish them from the then obvious default. World War I was not called World War I before there was World War II. It was simply the Great War. In France, French doors, French fries, and French kiss, are simply called doors, fries, and a kiss. Sliding doors on the other hand are called American doors. More profound examples abound, but the idea is one. Language reflects perspective and perspective shapes attitude. Understanding the convertible and fickle nature of vantage points based on our limitation in time and space, then breeding the ability to see beyond our particular vantage point, is instrumental to better understand our world, each other, and even ourselves.
