Its a type of snobbery, in my opinion, to insist plays need to be seen, not read. Not everyone has access to theater, and for many of us, our point of entry into the art form was through reading. Reading a play can trigger a great deal of sensorial experiences; we can see the actors, hear them, live in the world the author created, like our imaginations take us in other fine forms of literature (yes, I do consider plays to be literature). That said, imagine how wondrous it is when those senses explode in real time, right in front of you? If youre privileged enough to experience live theater, nothing holds a candle. But lets not completely dismiss (or denegrate) the power of the play on the page, too.
