Its been a really long week. Bens dad was a teacher for over 32 years and there were hundreds of people at his funeral today from at least 3 states. Amazing. During part of the service, people were invited to come and speak/share a story. Our Parker (13) prepared a few words that I will share below. So many people came up to him afterwards and told him what a great job he did and he was beaming. :) We heard so many stories about his dad, but one was THE one that he will take away from this day. As a child, although he had a great dad, he can never remember his dad saying that he was proud of him. Something, every child really needs to hear over and over from their parents and honestly, what his heart has always longed for. After his dad died, he didnt think that hed ever hear what his heart so longed to hear. Then this afternoon, a couple came up to him and introduced themselves as friends from Florida (his parents go there every winter). They shared this story with him: When the people in the (retirement) park have a birthday, they make you come up front and ask you questions. This past birthday they asked Bens dad, Who do you most admire?. He answered, My son. The flood gate of tears opened. What a GIFT and what an answer to prayer that couples boldness and prompting to go tell him that one story was. So amazing. In you arent tearing up yet .... here is what Parker said in front of hundreds of people today: Hi, I am Parker Green and am Papa’s 2nd oldest grandson. He made the best grilled chicken legs every summer and he taught me how to fish. Every birthday he and Grammy took us out to lunch for our birthday and every summer they took some of the grandkids camping in their camper. I have awesome memories. We are all born with different gifts placed inside of us and Papa had lots of them! Papa was always helping dad and us kids build and fix things. He built stairs for us, helped finish basements for us, built bird houses, laid our laminate floor, and last year built a really cool crows nest above our chicken coop. When Papa was building or fixing things he would always say, “Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.” But then he’d always also say, “There is a way around Murphy” - and he’d get the job done! He was an excellent problem solver and didn’t let problems stop him - he pushed through them. Papa left us with lots of good memories and I’m thankful for all of the seeds he sowed into my life. The Bible says that when a seed is sown, the harvest depends on the kind of soil it falls on. They won’t be wasted on me. I love you Papa!
