Its been a very busy and emotional day for me. We are moving my mother into a Assisted Living Residence, which is extremely nice and she wont have to worry about anything, and some of the pressure will be off of me to keep up with her care. She had been falling a lot, and I was spending most of my days and nights, going to let the fire department in to get her up off of the floor. She falls very easy, not hurting herself, but unable to get up by herself. It was just going to be a matter of time before her luck would run out and she would hurt herself, as a result of falling. She is almost 91 years old and she has a balance and equilibrium problem. I am in my 70th year, and I cant do like I used to. Theres a lot to taking care of an elderly parent. Doctor and dental appointments, grocery shopping, banking, hair and nail, etc. appointments. Yesterday and today, my daughters, 2 grand daughters and son-in-law, had to pack up her 2 bedroom apartment to get ready for the move. It was so overwhelming to see the things she had accumulated over the last 7 years living in her senior apartment. I think it was probably equally overwhelming for her to see all of her household things, furniture, and personal items, and collectibles being sold, donated or thrown away. It was a job that I wasnt looking forward to, but it had to be done. My mother has been a saver of most things, and she doesnt let go very easily, but she did fairly well. Much of what we did, she couldnt see, and that was just as well. Its not easy to be a care giver, even if it is just part time. Not easy to be on call 24/7. Not easy to see your parent become more the child and you become the parent. When I look at all of this in retrospect, it has been a journey, but to see my mother in my memory, go from being young and vivacious, to middle aged, to old age, is a gift that many dont get to witness. The good thing about it is that she will be able to enjoy the rest of her time here in luxury, without a care in the world, and we will be able to enjoy her, visit her, and know that she will be safe and comfortable. Anyone who has taken this journey like mine, my heart goes out to you. Champions are we!
