Its been nearly 3 months since Kyles accident and I can still hear - TopicsExpress

Its been nearly 3 months since Kyles accident and I can still hear the sound that blood makes as it rushes to your head and all your senses are suffocated as I read the text I received in a residents room at work. I will never forget the feelings of absolute helplessness and uncertainty as I rushed out of this building which I work in tonight, and straight down 495 and exit 23B to find what awaited on the third floor at Umass Worcester medical center. I did not know what I would be entering into but when I read the directory in the elevator I knew it wasnt a minor mishap but a nightmare that had been disguised until then. That night of September 1st was easily the most heart wrenching torment Ive been dealt and remains difficult to envision when it replays through my head unwelcome. That day Kyles injuries were outlined as but not limited to a broken femur, fractured vertebrae(s), dislocated toe, inflamed arm which later was identified as compartment syndrome, smashed left leg and multiple abrasions and extreme contusions all over his body. Kyle was placed on a ventilator, a catheter was inserted, IVs and cords connected him to an array of intimidating machines, and a rod was set in place through his tibia. He was in a medically induced comatose state for 4 painful and mentally exhausting days in a small room with no windows, doors or space to digest anything else but the fast paced beeping of the equipment and the whooshing sound of the trac that assisted his ability to breathe. Less than 3 months ago...and what started off with desperate hope has evolved into a new beginning. Today Kyle has survived 9 surgeries, not counting, and all that remains are crutches, a cast to hold the stabilized toe (fingers crossed), and a splint&grip to hold his forearm and fingers in place at night. He has pulled past the odds and surprised everyone with his remarkable progress and recovery in the works. His arm which took the full impact of his crash initially had no sensation but the numbness has come down to his fingers, and spots on his palm. He converses, behaves, laughs, smiles, and exists just as he did before the accident, an observation that was amiss for the first 2/3 months. Kyle is out of the roaring tides and swimming through to the shore(knocking on wood to overpass the superstitious ones). He regularly attends occupational therapy for his hand and physical for everything else. The boy that has my heart, who made my high school yearbook holding my hands singing to me at prom, who sings to the words on the country radio station driving down the road, who pursued me not once but twice before I gave him a shot that turned into the greatest decision and transpired the most incredible moments that will last forever. The card that Kyle was dealt although harsh, has finally made a turn to reveal the light. And it has gotten easier. Everything that could have went wrong went right and there have been more ups and downs. Today my best friend is talking about a future, getting back to work, and driving his 7.3 once its ready. Once its done he claims it will be our primary mode of transportation, for a while, because he misses it beyond belief. And I was never looking forward to sitting in that passenger seat as much as I am now, beside the boy who has scared the living daylights out, and brought them back again. I love you.
