Its been quite some time since we updated all of you on the progress of the agriculture program for empowerment of women in Zambia, Africa. Just in - this note from Kathy, our dear colleague in Africa. Dearest Judy, Yesterday was Field Day in Kachele Village. Dec 6 will be the grand Field Day when the 16 women from the surrounding villages plant the seed maize in the 5 acres prepared land. Yesterday was given over to George [conservation officer from Nat. Farmers Union/Chibombo] to instruct / demonstrate what is expected and must be carried through to produce a good harvest. He was on his feet for four hours before Rob - [from SEED CO - and one of the sponsors for this project], suggested everybody might like a 5 minute break. Believe you me, it was only 5 minutes - then the voice rung through the scatted group by the chair lady time up. And lectures / demonstration carried on for another 90 minutes. These folk are eager to set in motion and see the fruits of their instructions / labor. It was disappointing there was not a larger turn out since anybody is welcome to join in the events, to learn and then go home to put into practice what has been taught. However, this may come about with time! Photo 1. Some of the 16 women in the picture - a surprise gift from SEED CO. for each to receive 1 X 25kg bag seed maize to be planted in their own fields. In front you will see 10 X 10kg bags seed maize: another warm surprise, free gift to the residents of Kachele Village to plant in their fields. Photo 2. George, Conservation Officer from National Farmers Union instructing / demonstrating / teaching on use of chemicals, etc. on the maize field. Foreground you will see the holes prepared at the last Field Day ready to receive the seed on the 6th December, the optimum time as the rains are expected next week. Photo 3. Rob, who works for SEED CO. is one of the team from ROTARACT, [the Young Rotarians/Lusaka] who have adopted this project as their permanent baby. In other words Empowerment of Women through Agriculture in the rural area - Kachele Village - will continue regardless who takes the Chair in ROTARACT. Photo 4. George demonstrating the use of the sprayer to be used for weed control in the 5 acre field. Its all very exciting and I am delighted this band of young Zambians in ROTARACT will be expanding the programme by opening up the next 10 acres of forest to agriculture in 2015. Love always, Kathy
