Its finally dawned on me that I may have to manage the opportunistic food thievery for a verrrrrrrrrry long time :/ If Im paying close attention and can drop in the odd well-timed growly leave it then Mr Chops will pay attention and sit a sensible distance away from the object of his desire and drool. Ive also started to employ the bread bin for snatchable items, such as cookies, cakes, etc, plus theres a large tupperware box that can be used to contain treasure. Essential now that Cheese is tall enough to reach almost any kitchen surface to any depth! However, all it takes is a second of lapsing and he knows 3:) For example, on Sunday Sophies plate of birthday pains au chocolat and chocolate doughnuts was sat on the garden table (supposedly safely blockaded and well supervised!) for hours whilst we were all sat out there. Distracted by a terrier, we all took our eyes off of the chocolatey goodness for a split second. Cheese appeared from under the table, twisted his head and legged it with a chocolate doughnut before anyone had really taken in what was going on o.O At this sort of moment, the children get cross and want me to reprimand Cheese, but I dont really see that hes to blame. He has this innate need to eat constantly and I KNOW that hes going to take any chances he gets so if he manages to get something, then its inevitably because Ive not been paying enough attention or one of the kids has left something within his reach. I also feel like its a total waste of energy to tell him off whilst hes swallowing something utterly delicious. Nothing I can say or do will counteract the reward of eating! And so, I hereby commit myself to monitoring this naughty yellow ninja dog for the rest of his days ;)
