Its funny how a memory can be so vividly burned into your brain. I - TopicsExpress

Its funny how a memory can be so vividly burned into your brain. I used to hear stories growing up about people remembering exactly where they were and what they were doing when JFK was shot. But I really had no clue about what they meant until 13 years ago. It was a beautiful Tuesday September morning. Sunny, not a cloud in the bright blue sky. It was my day off and I turned the TV on to SportsCenter and started to make a pot of coffee. When I heard the sound cut off. When I turned and looked at the TV, the screen said Special Report. Then cut to a reporter explaining how a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. My first thought was maybe a small Cessna or private jet must of had mechanical problems. A terrorist attack was the last thing from my mind. But for whatever reason, I popped a VCR tape in and began recording. When the reporter was talking, I could see above her shoulder the 2nd plane crash into the 2nd tower. This was no Cessna, nor small plane, This was a full sized Jet Airliner. My mind started to race. For a brief moment, I was thinking there must be a transponder problem luring planes into that area. Maybe I just didnt want to believe the inevitable. I heard the reporter saying possible attack, but my mind just wouldnt accept or process that. But, when they said that there is a third plane that just crashed into the Pentagon, I knew without a shadow of doubt that the unthinkable was happening. Then the forth in Penn. I was in shock. But nothing prepared me for the shocking and horrific scene of watching live the first tower collapsing. Ten minutes earlier, they interviewed a fire fighter covered in soot telling the reporter that he has to go back in. The reporter asking the fire fighter why? He just said, because my brothers are in there and walked into the smoke headed back in. I was glued to the TV all day watching all of the events unfold. Watching from my backyard F-16s and Apache Helicopters race up North along the coast was surreal. Yes, this was a day that will be burnt into my memory for the rest of my life. I will never forget the brave Heroes. From law enforcement, to the fire fighters and search and rescue, to medical and first aid, to the brave souls who gave their all. No, I will never forget what those cowards have done.
