Its not enough to bark on Facebook/Twitter about doing something about social/economic challenges and social injustices that minorities and people in poverty face in this country. DO SOMETHING that helps LIFT people out of poverty---not keep them in it. Its not enough if youre a limousine liberal posting about social injustices from behind a computer screen in your suburban neighborhood or whatever hood you come from--DO SOMETHING. Suggestions? Yes, I do have them--join a big brothers/big sisters club, join the Boys/Girls Club downtown, COACH SPORTS, join a tutoring service in a Title One School-- areas where minorities need them. Join a civic group that encourages voting in impoverished neighborhoods. Having grown up in poverty the first 23 years of my life and virtually on my own since the age of 15---I was privileged enough to have people in my life that provided the fertile ground for me to earn my way out of the poor house and have a decent life. Im thankful for those people and pay that back by being a HS teacher/coach whos been privileged enough to be a small part of MANY great stories of pulling people out of rough situations like poverty or dysfunctional backgrounds for almost 20 years. BE THE CHANGE YOU SEEK IN THE WORLD, dont bark about it. Help those going down the wrong path find the right one.
