Its official now... Every teacher in CCPS is going to drop down 2 - TopicsExpress

Its official now... Every teacher in CCPS is going to drop down 2 steps next year. According to the numbers that have recently been presented by CCPS, 600+ teachers will be on Step 1 next year. 600 of 1900 total teachers. Over 30%. Let me clarify, nearly 1 out of every 3 teachers in CCPS next year will be on STEP 1. This message was sent by CCEA President, Ted Payne to members of the CCEA today: Good Morning, Last night a meeting was held at Manchester Valley High School to listen to the concerns of the staff regarding the salary scale issue that was raised two weeks ago. Superintendent Guthrie, Jimmie Saylor, Kelly Keith, Glen Galante, Tony Roman and I were present at this meeting. The greatest concern that was expressed was the movement from the 22 step salary scale we have for this year to the 20 step salary scale in the final year of the current negotiated agreement. The biggest issue was the elimination of step 2 and 3 and resetting those steps to step 1. The major concern was the lack of communication regarding this issue. I take full responsibility for the confusion regarding this issue. It was my understanding that during the ratification meetings and the Q & A that accompanied the ballot, which the issue was explained and everyone understood what is happening in the third year of the agreement. That being said, we are in conversation with CCPS regarding changes that can occur to the salary scale. The process does not happen overnight and will take time and agreement from both CCPS and CCEA to reopen negotiations. Our negotiating team worked diligently on developing an equitable scale that made sure that all members received the promised 2.5% COLA and 1% bonus that was agreed upon. One stipulation was that we would allow CCPS to increase the starting salary to $43,000. The problem is since we have been frozen on step for 6 of the last 7 years, the salary scale is not set to years of experience. This has upset many members and I fully understand this. Again, I do apologize for the miscommunication and the appearance of ‘lack of transparency’ that has occurred because of this issue. We will continue to work on developing better communication channels to make sure that you are informed on what we are doing at CCEA. Sincerely, Ted Payne, President Carroll County Education Association
