Its the birthday of Nikola Tesla (Никола Тесла), who was born in 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia. Tesla studied at the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz and ll at Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague. He then worked as an engineer for a succession of telegraph companies - in Budapest, Paris and - after emigrating to the US - New York City. In 1887 Tesla developed his most famous invention, the induction motor, which is powered by alternating current. The motor and other inventions caught the attention of industrialist George Westinghouse, whose company was a proponent of AC systems. Thanks, in part, to Tesla, Westinghouses AC standard prevailed over Thomas Edisons DC standard in the US.
