It’s mushroom season. While mushrooms and other fungi can be found almost any time of year, fall is the time where most toxic exposures occur. Dogs (and children) are at highest risk of exposure because they like to wander and taste things. The majority of mushrooms are not toxic, but those that are can be deadly. Try to limit your pet’s access to mushrooms by keeping them leashed when walking in areas where mushrooms grow. If you see your dog ingesting a mushroom, call us immediately. If possible, it is best to collect a sample of the type of mushroom ingested for identification. Don’t put mushrooms in plastic bags, paper bags are best. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially toxic mushroom OR any other poisonous substance, you may also call the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline, at (888) 426-4435. A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.
