Ive been musing over the labels that Americans seem prone to use - TopicsExpress

Ive been musing over the labels that Americans seem prone to use to self-identify with a specific group or heritage, you know African-American, Mexican-American, etc. and was realising this is not my experience as a Canadian. My parents were born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland and immigrated here in the mid-sixties. They call themselves Canadian, not Scottish-Canadian. Our media rarely informs us of peoples ethnicity, race or religious affiliation unless its germane to the story. I cant help but wonder if political parties and corporations could further their interests, they would have latched onto this tactic years ago. Are Canadians less inclined to allow the powers that be to focus on our differences, or have those powers decided the benefits arent worth the trade-off? Any thoughts from my friends around the world? Do Australians call themselves African-Australians for example?
