Ive recently had 3 Emails asking me to re-post my Cerritos Strory. So, here it is, again. Everybodys heard stories about guys firing their dragsters on city streets but very few have photographic evidence. This is our little fiasco with the Community Property I fueler (Bommarito-Mason-Kay-Smith-Ewald) outside our shop in Cerritos, CA in 1971. We had just put a new engine in the car and wanted to check it out before heading off to the digs. In the pre-starter motor days this could only be done by the good old push start and thats what we did. The top shot is after the car is lit and Im heading back toward our complex. After making a U-turn at the end of the block a short burnout seemed like a good idea. All the local businesses came to a halt for a few minutes to check out the noise. The Noise was not just wasted on the neighbors. A Cerritos cop was over a mile away when we fired the car and was at my side when I climbed out. My so-called partners/crew were nowhere in sight. Above the cop (Stan) is done asking me, What the f--k are you doing? -- done asking me for my license (NHRA or California?) and deciding if, or better yet how, hes going to write a ticket. After figuring out that nobody would believe the ticket anyway, Stan made me a deal. I dont do this again and the whole thing would be forgotten. He called in (above) and told the store it was nothing. They had trouble buying that because of the dozen or so phone calls theyd gotten from the hospital just two blocks away. Nonetheless, it was Stans call and I got a skate. He and his partner(s) soon became regulars around our shop as they found it was a great place to hide, bullshit and get coffee. After they figured out I wasnt going to jail, my guys came out of hiding and pushed the car back to the complex. Over the years Ive gotten a lot of laughs over this deal especially when I think about what the ticket would have looked like had he written it. That would have been a great read, ya think? Later that day we qualified #4 at Irwindale and went a couple of rounds. Nobody complained about the noise there.
