Ive recently had 3 or 4 people suggest religion to me. The truth - TopicsExpress

Ive recently had 3 or 4 people suggest religion to me. The truth is I rarely express my beliefs on spirituality and religion because its a very touchy subject and Im always scared to offend someone or that I will lose my patience. I was born in a Catholic country were you can find people with all levels of involvement with the church. You have some people that practice religion every day (like my grandmother) and you can find people that dont practice it at all (like me). I confess that at one point I did believe in god the way most Christians would describe him, and I would even pray to him. But the older I got the more questions I had. I realized the answers that were given to me didnt satisfy me, so I started looking in other places. I read about Christians, Muslims, Jews, Wiccans, Thelemites, etc... At one point I was really excited about Thelema because in some ways it seemed to make more sense to me than the rest. But it still didnt feel right, so I concluded that they were all wrong and I would have to just pick out what I liked. It wasn’t until maybe 2 years ago that I discovered Carl Sagan. And in his book “Demon-Haunted World” he explains the importance of science and scientific thought. Not only will it help us understand our universe but it can help us make better decisions in our everyday life. What better way to get to know “god” than by studying his creation? But studying all his creation, not just the bible. I realize now that the reason none of those religions satisfied me was because they all offer a sort of fantastic view of the world were anything is possible (miracles, resurrection, etc…) but even as a kid I felt like I needed evidence in order to fully believe in something. And that is where all religions, superstitions, pseudoscience and folklore fail. If there’s any conclusion to this, it’s that humans need to discipline their emotions in order to make intelligent decisions that will benefit them. Religion offers a guideline to life that works because it was designed for it. There is no doubt in my mind that a long time ago some people realized that they needed to force people to be civil. Otherwise, society wouldn’t have worked. People would have just been able to do whatever they wanted with no conscience to tell them when something was wrong or excessive. I think that at the time it was a good idea and religion worked in giving people order and hope. However, we have come a long way since those times, and it’s time to get rid of this primitive “moral system” and start thinking for ourselves more. This is just my opinion and I don’t really want to start a debate. I just wanted to express a little bit of how I see the world and that I don’t feel lost without god. Instead I feel like science gets me closer to our world and it makes me feel part of something amazing, even if we don’t know everything about it yet. Excuse my poor grammar, Hector
