Ive seen more than a few posts on my friends list of folk who are grumbling and complaining about the Christmas stuff being in stores all ready. Ive seen a link about actually having a war on Christmas... that retailers should not get their stuff out on November 1st and that everyone should just wait until were past Remembrance day and the American Thanksgiving. Or wait until December 1st, darnit! Well, Ive got two thoughts on this. 1/ Do you know WHY retailers get the Christmas merch on the shelves on November 1st? Because shoppers want it there. In the week leading up to All Hallows I was approached by, I would guess, between 30 and 40 individual shoppers all asking where our Christmas stuff was. Apparently our competition had it out all ready. And when I mentioned that we would have ours out on the 1st of November, RIGHT AFTER All Hallows the consistent response was Well, were shopping at your competitors then! Retailers stay in business by offering the product that the market wants, when the market wants it. Yes indeed... we created this ourselves. Our shopping habits and our demands shaped the response of the market. Marketing is also involved [its ALWAYS involved] and so it becomes a chicken or egg thing. 2/ The number of people on my friends list gleefully exclaiming their joy at the Halloween stuff hitting store shelves in early September was... larger. Nearly legion. And some of those folk are the same ones being disgusted that the Christmas stuff is all ready out. That, ladies and gentleman, is hypocrisy at its finest. Why not wait until after the Autumn Equinox? Or Yom Kippur? Or Canadian Thanksgiving? Goose... gander... know the saying?
