I’m not religious, I was raised Episcopalian, but not anymore. - TopicsExpress

I’m not religious, I was raised Episcopalian, but not anymore. I’d consider myself spiritual. But I remember Sunday School, and I sure can research… “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.” -Matthew 10:8 Now, before you roll your eyes, saying “Kate’s on her soapbox again”, bear with me. There’s what the media calls The War on the Poor being waged by conservatives. I wouldn’t consider myself poor, but I have been in the past, homeless even. And I have become a casualty of this war. 14 years ago I broke my right pinky toe. I couldn’t afford to have it taken care of then so I taped it up and soldiered on. Over the years it’s gotten worse, and all along I wished I had the means to have it taken care of. Last year there was hope that I would finally have the means: The ACA… “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” -Matthew 25:35-40 …But, no. State conservatives blocked the Medicaid expansion. Cutting off myself and 400,000 other Virginians from coverage. I’m a full time student at age 46. I don’t work enough to earn enough to qualify for the ACA subsidies (I survive off of student loans), being 46 means I can’t be on my parent’s plan, like my classmates, and as I don’t have any disabilities or dependents, I don’t qualify for unexpanded Medicaid. So today, I’m reminded with every painful step that I got screwed by republicans. So, why all the bible quotes? To question why these people are automatically ceded moral authority. They claim to be Godly Christians, but act in a manner not even remotely in line with Christ’s teachings. So how is it that not only do they consider themselves pious, but others, especially the media do as well? If you dont want your tax dollars to help the poor, then stop saying that you want a country based on Christian values. Because you dont! -President Jimmy Carter In closing I leave you with this (I know how fundamentalists love Leviticus)… “And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the Lord your God. You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; you shall not lie to one another.” –Leviticus 19:10-11 nytimes/2013/11/01/opinion/krugman-a-war-on-the-poor.html?_r=0
