I’ve made no bones about my love of a certain red-caped Kryptonian, nor have I been exactly coy about how much I was looking forward to the Man of Steel movie that debuted this weekend. And even though I’m as busy as they come with some familial issues and whatnot these days, I grabbed the 10 year old and snuck away to an early evening matinee to watch a movie I’ve been anxious to view since the very first teaser trailer hit last year. There’s a danger in this kind of anticipation though, isn’t there? You build yourself up to see a movie and when the final credits roll you’re often left empty and in a state of extreme disappointment. The Man of Steel did not leave me in such a state. Simply put: This is the new standard in superhero film-making. It is by far the best of its genre. I remember watching the alien invasion in Avengers and saying, “wow, this is epic.” After what I saw this afternoon, that invasion now seems small and insignificant. Take a look at the Metropolis skyline at the end of the final battle between Kal-el and General Zod. That’s what the Hulk should have done to a city, but didn’t. This was big, ballsy, and epic. It’s the kind of movie that you sit through with your mouth agape wondering at the magnitude of what you’re seeing. But it was also a very human movie which is the one thing every single Superman movie before this failed to capture. Henry Cavell was and is Superman (sorry Chris R.I.P.). His handling of the character was emotional and driven. He was matched only by incredibly brilliant portrayals of both Jor-el and Zod. What a phenomenal cast to tell a phenomenal story. This is the single best superhero film I have ever watched, and it has me wondering how DC can even come close to reproducing in the future.
