JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ROCK THE LAFAYETTE REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR, MARCH 7-8 AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY Jefferson High School science students crushed their competition this past weekend at the Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair held at Purdue University! This regional fair serves a twelve county area and because of the numerous medals earned by the Science Bronchos, Jefferson High School placed first place, earning the Outstanding School Award. West Lafayette placed second, McCutcheon placed third, and Central Catholic placed fourth. Jeff students grabbed the gold medal in 8 of the 14 categories (twice the number of the second place team) earning Mr. Ruhl the Outstanding Teacher Award. Jeff High School’s own Kalina Harden – a freshman (and former Tecumseh Singer and cellist), was selected as one of the top two students overall! With this award, Kalina Harden earned the opportunity to compete at the State Science and Engineering Fair April 5th along with 9 other top students from the Lafayette regional fair. Jeff students Sarah Cooper, Jacob Bertucci, Shelby Roberts, and Ashley Anderson were also selected to be part of the elite 10 students who will be headed to the state science fair, where they will compete with top winners from Indiana’s 9 other regional fairs for scholarships, prizes, and all expenses paid trips to the International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles in May. The following Jeff students earned honor for themselves and Jeff High School: Grace Blackwell – silver medal in animal sciences Dane Erickson – gold medal in animal sciences, College of Science Young Scientist of Promise Award April Basiletti – honorable in behavioral and social sciences Cecily Cavanaugh – bronze medal in behavioral and social sciences Ryan Ensign – gold medal in behavioral and social sciences, American Psychological Association Award Lexi Hull – silver medal in behavioral and social sciences Hailey Kim – honorable mention in behavioral and social sciences Jenifer Anderson – honorable mention in biochemistry Jordan Thorpe – bronze medal in biochemistry Estivan Carreon – silver medal in chemistry Mackenzie Rottler – honorable mention in chemistry Erin Huston – gold medal in earth and planetary sciences, U.S. Metric Association Award Kalina Harden – bronze medal in engineering, American Meteorology Award, College of Science Dean’s Award, Cosmos Foundation Award Gabby Mitchell – silver medal in engineering Olivia Newman – gold medal in engineering; Yale Science and Engineering Award Myles Koenig – gold medal in energy and transportation Sarah Cooper – silver medal in environmental science, College of Science Interdisciplinary Research Prize, College of Science Young Scientist of Promise Award Savannah Jonkman - honorable mention in environmental science Abigail Lammers – honorable mention in environmental science Curtis Mason – gold medal in math and computer science Lexxi Spillers – honorable mention in medicine and health Ashley Anderson – bronze medal in microbiology Jacob Bertucci – gold medal in microbiology, Department of Biological Sciences Award Trevor Harris – gold medal in physics Lexi Randolph – bronze medal in physics Shelby Roberts – bronze medal in plant sciences Russell Scott – Intel Excellence in Computer Science $200 cash award Congratulations to these outstanding science students!
