JUDY WILKINS MACKERRAS HAS DIED at 91 She was wife to Sir Charles, mother to their two children, magnificent protector of his interests, hilarious teaser of his reputation, and as clarinetist a fine musician in her own right. I had the privilege of first getting to know them in the early 90s, and of assisting Sir C during his time as Principal Guest Conductor at the San Francisco Opera, and later at The Met. What a wonderful pair, and what a great marriage. We spent many days exploring the California coast, strolling around redwoods, admiring bridges, climbing hills, and tooling around in Jaguars. And laughing. They traveled as students to Prague after the war, and Charles studied conducting with the great Vaclav Talich. Together, they mastered Czech. Years later we were doing Makropoulos at The Met, and I was sitting with Judy in the auditorium while Sir C was working with the chorus, in the original language. Judy, I asked, just how good is Charles Czech anyway? Not as good as he thinks it is, she replied in a flash. He roared with laughter. Sir Charles died four years ago, and Judy missed him every hour of every day since. She was a great lady, funny and alert to the end, dying very gently on Saturday with family by her side, smiling in the certainty that -- as he freely declared -- she had made possible one of the great careers in music. Thanks for all, Judy. -- Charles II
