James Carroll: He showed tremendous promise as an amateur boxer and entered competitive boxing at 22 years old.(This is actually late for a boxer in terms of age - but it did not hold him back.) His career stretched from 1954-1957. In a total of 33 fights he won 29 and lost just 4 bouts. He began boxing when he emigrated to Southampton and became the Southern Counties Lightweight Champion in the years 1954-1957. He was featured in many great fights and got a raw deal against Ollie Byrne in the National Championships in 1957. He was invited to represent Ireland on a tour of Canada and South Africa. He was still put out over the raw deal he got with Ollie Byrne in Dublin and declined the invitation. He retired shortly after at the comparatively young age of 25 years. (Coming next - the Gaelic footballing Carrolls.)
