James Stewart (1908/05/20 - 1997/07/02) James Maitland Stewart was born on 20 May 1908 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. popularly known as Jimmy Stewart especially in the United States, was an American actor of film, theater and American television Academy Award winner, famed for his particular personality on screen. During the course of his career, he acted in several films considered classics and was nominated five times for an Oscar Award, winning once in competition and receiving one for his career. He also had a notable military career reaching the rank of Brigadier General in the Air Force of the United States. His first appearance in the world of film was made in 1935 in The Murder Man (voice accusing, Tim Whelan). He later became famous for his speeches as protagonists in Frank Capra films, Vive You (1938), Mr. Smith (1939), and! Wonderful Life! (1946). He made more than 75 films and often played the role of an ordinary man endowed with decency and moral courage. His role as a reporter in The Philadelphia Story (1940), starring alongside Katharine Hepburn and directed by George Cukor, gave him an Oscar for best actor. He was nominated four other times for the Oscar, and in 1985 received one fee for the whole of his career. He was also famous for the Arizona Western (1939, George Marshall), Broken Arrow (1950, Delmer Daves), The Naked Spur (1953, Anthony Mann), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) and Cheyenne Autumn (1964) both of John Ford. Also noteworthy are the films in which he acted with director Alfred Hitchcock, including Rope (1948), Rear Window (1954), The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) and Vertigo (Vertigo, 1958). James Stewart died on July 2, 1997 at his home in Los Angeles.
