James Taylor is my musical hero... I learned to play the guitar by sitting for hours as a teenager, trying to mimic his velvety finger-picking style. I lived in Chapel Hill, NC for time, and I worked for an elderly lady who told me about a young, shy man who would bring his guitar over to her tea parties and sit in the corner; it was JT! As a therapist, his life story intrigues me. He was committed to Mclean Psychiatric Hospital when he was 17 because he was suicidal, and he nearly died several times from his heroin addiction. He still struggles with paralyzing anxiety at times, but he uses his music and physical activity to get through it. Im thankful that his parents committed him to Mclean where, as he describes in this video, he could find a safe place. I hope my office can serve as a safe place for people to process whatever is going on. And, if they are artists of any kind, then even better.
