Japanese anime never cease to amaze me. Barakamon - an anime about calligraphy. Or Silver Spoon, an anime about students in an agriculture college. They can take the most mundane of subjects and turn it into hit series. Wonder when we will achieve that level, at least in terms of variety. In terms of animation, I believe we havent explored 2d animations as much as we would have liked. We kinda jumped from usop sontorian or keluang man (2d) right to upin ipin (3d). Were missing a lot in between the transition. Just my 2 cents from a friend fb status, Yussuf. Not everyone are aware of this, and I am glad I have friends that appreciate good anime. Some malaysian are prejudice and think all anime are just weird cartoon about school girls with cat ears. Then, another group of Malaysian that just watch studio ghibli film only, missing out some other good anime did by other studios. From my observation, A lot of peoples that are in the local animation industry are fans of western cartoon, hence they are more likely to follow/replicate what western studio did. 3D animation follow the Pixar/Dreamwork style, 2D animation follow Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network style. (Not a bad thing, I like Wall-E, ratatouille and that old Nickolodeon cartoon, rockos modern life a lot). Another factor to look into is, which type of animation are more profitable/better ROI. Anime industry itself are struggling. And western studio/publisher will give you bigger budget for your project. More money means company decision maker, boss/investor will want to do the western style cartoon. But cant deny that are still a lot of Malaysian anime fans, who want to develop their own anime too. Unfortunately, making animation is a hard and tedious process (worse than games programming if you ask me). And everyone is like My idea is the best, I will be the story guy. No one want to do the hard work.
