Work Hours: 8:30am to 5:00pm Shift Work: No Overtime: As needed Travel: As needed This is a limited term wage position that is expected to last approximately six months. Description of Duties: Energy Assistance Workers are responsible for determining eligibility of individuals and families for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) which is administered by the Allegheny County Assistance Office. Applications will be authorized, rejected or pended based on LIHEAP policy. Written correspondence and eligibility notices will be developed and sent to applicants in accordance with policy. Energy Assistance Workers interview applicants, review LIHEAP applications, secure necessary verifications, perform mathematical calculations, and interprets and applies policy. Energy Assistance Workers process applications by completing appropriate forms and data entering required information into the LIHEAP eligibility system. Energy Assistance Workers explain the LIHEAP program and program requirements to applicants and in response to inquiry by the general public. Must also explain and make referrals to other agencies for the CRISIS, Dollar Energy and Weatherization Programs. Energy Assistance Workers intervene with fuel vendors as necessary. Energy Assistance workers maintains case records in paper and in electronic format. NOTE: This is seasonal work. Essential Functions: Must be present at work as scheduled to perform assigned duties. Communicates via telephone with applicants in order to gather information. Conducts in person interviews as necessary. Communicates orally and in writing. Gathers, analyzes and evaluates information to determine eligibility. Selects, interprets and applies policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to LIHEAP. Uses a personal computer to perform basic arithmetic calculations and to data enter information into the LIHEAP eligibility. Completes forms accurately. Prepares for and represents the County Assistance Office at appeal hearings as assigned. Maintains and retrieves files and records. Uses other office equipment such as copiers, faxes, scanners, etc as necessary. Interacts objectively and in a businesslike manner with staff, applicants, business partners, vendors and the public under circumstances that may be stressful.
